Wonderful Town
For the first time ever the Royal Exchange Theatre, The Hallé Orchestra and The Lowry combined their artistic forces to present this remarkable fully staged, brilliantly choreographed production of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein‘s musical comedy, Wonderful Town.
The musical follows Ruth Sherwood and her beautiful sister Eileen as they leave Ohio to seek fortune and romance in New York. As the girls try to catch a break as writer and actress they find themselves in the midst of downtown Manhattan, befriending their startling neighbours and leading Brazilian sailors dancing the Conga. It’s all a million miles away from their humdrum lives in Ohio, but will Ruth and Eileen find what they are looking for?
Wonderful Town first premiered in New York in 1953 where it won five Tony Awards including Best Musical.
The 2003 revival also won further Tony and Drama Desk Awards.
